Lady Gaga... WTF?
And now for something completely different...
If 'music' is pure hype and nothing beyond the forced sensational appearance, then Lady Gaga is the most 'unique' character these days as we're brought to accept (or believe).
Life on this planet in general is so bizarre, I really don't see the difference in Lady Gaga's self mass exploitation. So, what is she so unique about after all?
Being so desperately hungry for media attention? Her 'extravagant' looks? Her 'controversial' claims of (supposedly) being a transsexual? Her aggressive PR campaign? Her music? Her stardom? Her celibacy claims? Being the new 'Madonna'? This last one, I choose to ignore.
Lady Gaga is nothing more but an INSTANT icon based on various blueprints (including Madonna's). Intelligent but expendable and she's aware of it. Sucking out the juice while it lasts. Will we remember her after a five years time? Maybe... Who knows... If she delivers a proper album free of mainstream cliches... Something 'unique' in sound and image.
The fact of a matter is - as a consumer, that I am constantly bombarded with her appearance; be it fashion magazines, crossword puzzle magazines, PR articles, web banners, web articles, even a USB stick with her character has been produced and advertised... The moment I heard 'Poker Face' I was horrified by the fact this is just another characterless, over-exaggerated media icon pointing out her extravagance and eccentricity but as far as I am concerned - up to this point, that 'extravagance' and 'eccentricity' have definitely nothing to do with music. And in Lady Gaga's case, 'music' (in its worst sense, of course) is just the ideal vehicle to sell crap. And pardon me saying - Lady Gaga is no better or worse than all of the countless (past or present) "Rihannas", "Britneys", "Beyonces", etc, etc. She is one in a row. She will stay in a row and enjoy her instant cult status - mainly thanks to most of her audience without personal taste. Forgive me for saying this, it wasn't meant as an insult but as a remark regarding forced parameters that create what is supposed to be a major public taste, or even worse - a major success. And just because Lady Gaga sold millions of whatever even before she stepped on the world's showbiz map, I don't find that of any - whether artistic or commercial - value. She is just a very expensively marketed brand to a cheaply manufactured product.
And speaking of Madonna in Lady Gaga's context, the only common thing about the two is their everlasting hunger for attention - they don't care how far it is taking them, as long as they remain in the public's eye.
However, when you look back at Madonna, the only thing she could have looked up to is the New Wave scene. Everyone has their heroines, heroes, idols and role models to look up to - Madonna may have been there first, but no matter whom she looked up to (Debbie Harry or Cyndi Lauper for instance?), she still was a very true pop star in her own way.
If Madonna 'copied' from someone, it was mainly the fact she carefully listened to other people's records and chose the right producers to work with, which is evident in a number of her studio albums - something Lady Gaga very probably will never achieve - and you know why? Because Lady Gaga is using blueprints in a very wrong way - it should be electro-pop but it is not... it should be r'n'b but it is not... in the end it is a mere spineless shallow mixture that aims only at visual shocks. Her video for the song 'Telephone' is one such proof. If only she could, she would wear a refrigerator on her head and stick needles in her eyeballs only to prove how "extravagant" or 'provocative' she can be. Well, luckily for her and luckily for the public, the refrigerator is too heavy and the needles sticked in eyeballs are too hurtful. So at least we're spared some of her exhibitionism.
You may find some of Madonna's earlier records dated but I can say, Madonna was far more clever (or careful) in gaining her deserved pop-success. A lot of her albums, practically each one - from 'Madonna' to 'Ray of Light' - is a well crafted studio masterpiece in itself - because these were pop-songs with a pedigree, delivering a fine balance between being provocative and naive. Even her hard-core excursions like 'Justify My Love' and 'Erotica' still have some sense of artistic discretion.
Once Lady Gaga delivers an album like 'Erotica' or individual songs like 'Live To Tell', 'Oh Father', 'Dear Jessie', 'Secret', 'I'll Remember' or 'Candy Perfume Girl' - or take a simple, free-minded dancefloor charmer like 'Holiday' - then she will be worth considering her musical talent instead of an overblown dress code. Until then, it remains a cliche - putting Lady Gaga closer to 'Crazy Frog' (the ideal example here is 'Bad Romance') than any female artist she's been so often compared to.
The only time Lady Gaga sounds good, is on occasional fashion photograph - with the volume off.
